The American artist Spector is also an art historian and critic. To make his own unique compositions, he combines other artists’ ideas and styles. For example, this collage pieces together scraps of art from different eras: the windmill is a postcard painted in a style similar to that of the seventeenth-century artist Hobbema, the background is Impressionistic, like Monet’s Water Lilies, and the colored squares come from diagonal compositions by the twentieth-century artist Mondrian.
